I know the world is a complete sh*tstorm of inexplicable violence and mayhem, but is it my imagination or is there far too much Harlan Coben on streaming right now?
Every time I turn on Netflix there’s a new British woman with a bland, but semi-sordid past catching up to her and threatening her safe, bourgeois existence. The low-stakes plot devices and overplayed soundtracks are making me exceedingly tired. Ghaaaagh! Help, Help! Heroine #453’s going to lose her Volvo to “You Don’t Own Me”?!! The algorithm’s writing telly again and it cannot be stopped!
And what do we tell our kids? Stay inside the next four years, ration your gummies, try not to be twats to each other? Do we Tracy Flick it? Fight the good fight, girls!
In our immediate friend and family circle, there’s already been unexpected loss and heartbreak. I feel like everyone’s still holding their breath. We carry on with our projects—knowing that the humble ones have real possibilities and the grand ones—well, it’s hard to say. There are so many unknowns…
But what about you… dear, intrepid reader? If 2025 is already a bust, how do you plan to ride out this volatile time and keep your head level?
For my part, I plan to be reading manuscripts for Empress Editions and fussing over typography, but I’ve already seen a number of friends making plans to cocoon or escape or tunnel into new projects in their own unique ways. But you must have hobbies, no?
Apparently, 2025 is shaping up to be a Hermit year in the tarot. But before you dismiss it as a time for navel-gazing, consider this: with an oligarch-proxy president who thinks dropping billions on explosive launchpad experiments is a good Tuesday, maybe this card’s introspective vibe is exactly what we need.

Learning how to become flower farmer/arranger (my bulbs will be planted in the next week or so.) I've bought a book to help me learn about the various flowers for various seasons and I'll be doing "au natural" type flower arranging. Hubby has to make the roadside stand, but he's good at that stuff, so I'm sure it'll be ready by spring. When all else is going to shit, at least there will be flowers. Lots of them!
I will expect the worst, hope for the best, and keep putting one foot in front of the other.
