Thursday Threads: Mischief as superpower! What benevolent prank would you play?
Pretend you're Harriet the Spy or Amelie or a Rockefeller... What secret, good deed would you do or prank would you pull, if resources weren't an issue?
Hello, Lovelies,
So, in keeping with our Harriet the Spy theme, here’s a thread to set your mind to mischief… What benevolent prank would you pull to create a bit of joy or ease in someone else’s life? Or maybe even your own?
For example, if I’m flying somewhere and I end up with a seatmate who vibes “total bummer” or “scary” and they ask me what I do for a living to make small talk, I completely LIE and tell them I’m an Actualarist. This immediately shuts down all conversation and I am free to read in peace for the rest of the trip.
On a more altruistic front, I was just reading this and LOVE it!
See what a difference a silly ruse can make???
Years ago, my mum found out a neighbor of ours had cancer and snuck over the fence one night and planted the gorgeous flowers in her garden.
So, when was your last worthy prank? Or secret good deed? Are you due for one?
My next book, THIS IS GOING TO BE HARD FOR YOU is essentially a Carl Hiassen-style prank to bring about restorative justice while saving some doofuses from inadvertently winding up as black market organ donors. What can I say, we all have our projects :) Le sigh.
If I had unlimited resources, I’d do as George Clooney did and have a surprise dinner party for all my friends—mostly mid-life women who are struggling-ish—and give them each a million (with taxes pre-paid on top). Can you believe George did that? Such a mensch.
But small deeds are just as good, so fess up! And don’t be afraid to be oddly specific :)

Amelie is my favorite foreign film! Lurve it. Not to steal the same idea, but I would pull a George Clooney, too. Since my Friend Circle involves two people whom I've known for over 20+ years (each), it'd be just a dinner and the amount I'd give them would be, like, 5 mil or something.
Inspired to add a story about a friend who passed away 10 years ago. Maria was a HS buddy. In her adult life she lived in Paris and had an elderly neighbor widow who lived alone. Maria brought her flowers every week which always brought a smile and many Merci’s from the widow. I heard this story told at Marias funeral. The smallest of gestures can change a life.
