I never imagined the words "sterile" and "airport" in the same sentence. Like. Ever. Her version of sterile and mine would definitely not match. LOL

A sterile space??? How about I put a tiny mask on my tiny deodorant; are we good then? I hope the TSA agent went home and watched Trainspotting so your comment fully landed.

Congratulations on finishing your adaptation, and I hope you get the jokes to hit as hard as you need them to. I know how hard that can be. And thank you for introducing me to alphaguess. It was maddening in the best way. I can't decide whether I want to play it every day or forget I ever saw it.

Oh my goodness, I wish I'd thought to say that! I'm sure the poor TSA agent went home to her mountain hovel and had a massive whiskey after dealing with our grumpy, complainy lot. I turned in the pilot yesterday. I think I nailed the jokes. We'll see. The one EP is tough. I needed to write barbs between two characters with so much instant antipathy for each other... for some reason, that's coming easy this week, lol. But, gaaagh, Alphaguess is sadistic puzzling to be sure!!! There are worse out there though--the Guardian puzzle folks are a menace with their anagram crosswords. I'm useless with those 🤯

I'm sure the jokes are great! That's too funny about this week putting you in the right headspace for writing animosity. Consider it a gift from the gods, I guess. Anyway, it must be a huge relief to have finished. I'm a freak for crosswords and other word games, but an anagram crossword is a mashup that I suspect was invented by a sadist, and that I'm sure would lead to madness. I want no part of that.

So many good lines here; I'm always grateful for what you write. I know when I read these newsletters, I'm always going to laugh. Especially the part about the TSA because I frequent a small town with a similar TSA women who let's nothing through. Not even fudge which is a local delicacy. And I'm always "randomly" picked for extra screening every time I leave. Anyhoo - your posts are a bright spot in my week, thank you and good luck with all that's on your plate!! XO

Yes, we just look so guilty trying sneak our fudge through security! I'm sure they eat it all. Next time, I'm bringing a pie. xo

Hoping your drunken pie works a treat. Laughed at your airport desk banter. I hope she looked up Trainspotting when she got home.

I’ll have to try The Diplomat. Thanks for the tip.

I’m in the UK, but thinking of my US friends this week. x

Love the TSA lady. I was hoping it would end with the two of you becoming besties and going for an airport watered down margarita.

Binging the Diplomat is on my calendar for when I return home.

This airport was too tiny to have a bar--otherwise I so totally would have bought Frances-McD-the-TSA-Lady a watered down margarita. I mean, she seemed like she needed it way out there... and who am I to pretend to be the cultural elite??? But OMG Keri Russell and Allison J. are so good... I'm going to watch it all over again. Hope your sister is doing better! xo

Ok, I've just put the recipe in the body of the post b/c it's long! The whipped cream is easy. 2 tbsp of white rum per 2 cups of whipping cream in the mixer! Never fails!

Lord who are these pansy-assed boy-men you’re keeping afloat? When is it time to throw your pretty flip-flopped feet at them and say, “Foot rub, STAT!” We watched a horror film this past week called Where Evil Lurks about a viral demon and whenever someone was infected the town folk said “we need to move the rotten.” So with that, LET’S MOVE SOME ROTTEN ALISA! Out of your life, and hey, while we’re at it, out of this presidential election.

When it's eldercare and sibling care, it's tricky business... They are missing a mother. It's not my job, but I'd be a lesser person not to care or help?

I've dated 3 people in the past 11 years. One was great and two have been pretty short hitters. At this point, I'm ready to stay in PJs for the rest of my life. If you really love someone, I suppose you can forgive them for being scared about things, or having doubts, except when I met my ex-husband (way back), there were no questions. We were just... a fact, a done deal, so I tend to look at things that way. Also, you want to go out and do Hinge in your 60s??? Dating blows. You think you you can find someone funny and adorable, that you have chemistry with, who's read all of Proust and the Russians and who's not neurotic? Good luck with that!

But I love that you watch horror!? And I'm all for moving or excising the rotten out of life and our elections... I mean, it's too frightening to contemplate. I've practically blocked Alex Garland's film 'Civil War' from my psyche because I'm so fearful of that outcome. Watching horror is like a Shirley Jackson-esque exercise in indulging in horror in order to keep society from collapsing into it. So scary.

I binged The Diplomat last night, all of season 2 (FAB!) as an antidote to Trump and his disgusting hatred. How am I getting through the election? Barely!

Please, bless you, dear Alisa, read me tomorrow: Lyric essay in memory of my son. If you like, please do what you can. Took me five years before I could even begin writing it and seven years to finish it and it's only about 1500 words. Goes up tomorrow the anniversary of his death on November 4, 2017 at age 46. Love to you, ~ Mary

Oh, Mary, I will be right there with you and ready to read--with my whole heart--the essay that I know must have taken every ounce of your soul and being to write. Love you so and ready to help however you need. xoxo - Alisa

PS - Agree on season 2... FAB! Going to rewatch the whole thing again to channel strength.

Oy! It's been a week (or two) for you. No wonder you need some pre-holiday/de-stress election yoga. Thanks for the mention lovely. This too shall pass. And if all else fails and it doesn't, I suppose we'll be in the land of the living hell for four years. But, let's make like the person who wants to get on the plane and not argue that the sky is falling. I'm keeping my feet firmly planted in the land of magical thinking until forced to do otherwise. With you in spirit this week. xo

The Diplomat is fantastic! I'm starting Season 2 this week and can't wait for Alison Janney to show up. The amount of work that Boomer Dads dump on our plates because they haven't done their healthy aging/planning/strategizing homework is fucking insane, and we all deserve medals for handling it. I have the same "work furiously, then look away for a bit, then dive in again" work pattern when I'm concentrating on song lyrics or any kind of fast, snacky type of writing. Great minds? SEX HAIR IS EVERYTHING

SEX HAIR IS EVERYTHING. I'm so comforted to hear you work this furiously/look away-way too... I just rely so on a collaborator with comedy. And I am going totally to take a photo of how many pounds of butter and beef my father currently has in his freezer AFTER his open heart surgery and SHAME him at his next cardiologist's appointment, lol. It's bananas.
