Gaaagh! I was going to ask something much more heady and probing last night and then I totally WIMPED out when I stumbled across this silly picture and remembered how happy we were that year. Your stack is GREAT this week! So many GEMS!
These are indeed stressful times, but your Stack always makes me smile. Thank you for sharing your spirit and humor with us. My most searing Halloween memory is from the mid-70s. The musical Annie had just debuted and though I had yet to see it, I had the soundtrack on vinyl because my mom was a Broadway theater nut. I played that record non-stop and decided I wanted to be Annie for Halloween in 1977. My mom outfitted me in a little red dress and a wig, and I carried around a little pillow-type toy in the shape of a dog. At every door, neighbors stared at me in confusion and said, "Who are you supposed to be? Shirley Temple?" I remember feeling pretty crushed, but that's what I get for being an early adopter. At the end of the night, as I marveled at my good candy haul, I played the record yet again and was reminded that the "Sun will come out tomorrow." Fingers crossed it comes out on Tuesday!
Oh, Hilary... you were the OG Broadway Annie!!! I listened to that record constantly as a kid! I think I sang "Maybe" in my bedroom at least a hundred thousand times. I was 8 in 1977 and then when the film came out... I was even more smitten. I thought Ann Reinking was such a badass! I can't believe the neighbors didn't make the connection??? I mean, there was the comic that ran for 80 years. I totally applaud your inventiveness... you broke ground, lady! Glad the candy haul was at least good. And yes, fingers crossed for sun and sanity on Tuesday! We need it! xo
πI will wear the βOG Broadway Annieβ label as a badge of pride! Thank you! I was 7 in 77 and I also sang βMaybeβ at the top of my lungs back then so we were clearly simpatico. That song still makes me cry.
I was a candy savage. Trick or Treat was mine for the treats. I made multiple runs around the neighborhoods and when one bag was fully packed with candy I dropped it off at home, grabbed another one and went out again! I was untopable and relentless. Bag after bag filled. I can't remember if I changed costumes or just neighborhoods so as not to be recognized. And those were the days of a whole candy bar treat, not the minis. The best of candy fun
I love this! My parents would never let me get away with such strategic savagery and I'm sure our neighbors in SF would have gotten wise. They also had all these hippy 1970s theories about sweets and hyperactivity. It was total rubbish. Huzzah for the big bars!
Aw, thanks lady. Love! Sometimes you can show up, do all the things, take care of someone, be kind, and they can still say... yep, you're not enough. (SMDH. I'm so done.)
My favorite Halloween was when I rented a huge chicken costume (and by huge I mean wide and gloriously feathered) and went to a party incognito and danced my fluffy ass off. Not until I was a sweaty mess did I reveal the nutcase underneath.
A corporate client was involved with a school for autistic children. The school held an annual Halloween fundraiser, which my team would attend. One year, our collective costume was a newspaper, with each of us dressed as a different section. I was the obituaries. We threw it together at the last minute and somehow won first prize. I also won a trip to Antigua in the silent auction but never went before it expired because I'm a dope.
Ok, a newspaper is a truly GREAT costume. I love this. I would SO go as the Crossword or the Puzzle section, lol. But HOW do you not go to Antigua??? It's lovely! I would'a gone with you???
I WISH I'd been there!?! I was probably writing for some corporate yahoos or chasing children when I should have been taking a holiday--because now I'm just figuring out that life is a BLINK and then you're done, lol!
I just got in from an afternoon/evening of pumpkin carving, dinner making, candy giving, costume dressing, trick or treating, bonfire and fireworks. All chased down with later sandwich snacks and more candy. This is of course my life featuring two of my grandsons (5 and 3). It is freaking adorable (and exhausting). They left an hour or so ago and I'm too wired from candy and fireworks to go to bed, and yet, so exhausted, my brain is fuzzy. But, wouldn't trade it for anything.
It was SO good to see your beautiful face today Alisa. I'm sorry you're feeling down. Sending you a big virtual hallow's eve hug. xo
That sounds SO completely lovely, Kim! I cannot wait to be a gran :) I think working for Martha Stewart has trained me well in the craft and baking department. And seizures have certainly left me without any grandiose career ambitions other than the women's foundation and churning out writing on whatever platform will have me.
But to have those moments with the littles... of trick or treating and bonfires and dressing up is just the best. I love that you're having that in your life these days. Huzzah!
Yesterday was hard day for me, but it was restorative to be on the group yoga with you--thanks for pulling that together. It's the best. xoxo
We have the same question this week. Haha. Hereβs my answer. https://open.substack.com/pub/csteefel/p/whats-your-favorite-halloween-memory?r=g4otx&utm_medium=ios

And p.s. you could never possibly be uninteresting! Even in your most wretched state, youβre wicked cool.

Oh my goodness... you Heidi Klum'd Halloween, but in a much better, less reptilian way! That is THE BEST!

I know, right? I really botched that. Where were you when I needed you?!?

God, do I hear that. Weβre definitely cut from the same cloth!
