Thursday Thread: Things I Relentlessly Mock… But Secretly (Okay, Not-So-Secretly) Love 😂
Let’s talk about magicians.
Thanks for reading gotham girl! This is a free post, so please share it on social media; just be sure to include a link. Sincerest thanks to every single paid subscriber. You are keeping the lights on around here, and I can’t thank you enough for it.
Hello, Lovelies,
How the hell are you? Excited about Pope Leo? We do love a social justice Pontiff who calls it as he sees it. Huzzah! But let’s talk about magicians…
Yes, those magicians—the ones with completely unnerving facial hair, oddly proportioned heads, and a predilection for saying things like “Pick a card” in a skeezy whisper that suggests they might live in their mom’s basement wallpapered entirely with David Blaine posters.
I have, for years, considered it my sacred duty to make fun of them.
And yet… I recently watched the trailer for the new Now You See Me: Now You Don’t film and friends, I am in. Behold.
Magicians as heist masterminds? Say less. Rosamund Pike as a power-suited villain? Say no more. The premise is slick (I loved the first one), the illusions are wild, and suddenly I’m transported back to the time I went to the Magic Castle in LA and was fully humbled by a perfectly ridiculous man in a velvet blazer who made a coin vanish inside a sealed envelope… inside a lemon… inside my own purse.
So this week’s thread is:
What’s something you constantly make fun of… but actually love? (Think: Hallmark movies, astrology apps, men who own falcons, Trader Joe’s most unlikely seasonal snacks.)
Drop yours in the comments—I’ll be here, wondering if I’ve been hypnotized into finally respecting sleight-of-hand.
Yours in rabbits and hats, - xoxo - gotham girl
PS - I am a human typo. Amnesty appreciated.
I love to make fun of reckless characters in crime thrillers. You know the ones who will just follow strangers to a house in the middle of the woods and then be shocked when they get drugged and kidnapped? It's so dumb but I love raging about how much of a death wish they have while still hoping they make it out.
Also trashy shows like 90 day fiancé...
I can't wait to see it and, even though I think Tom Cruise is a creepball, I am also looking forward to the next Mission Preposterous coming out soon. thanks.
