You had me at The Go-Go's. LURVED that group. Their guitarist, Kathy Valentine, actually has a 'stack: https://katval.substack.com/. Also, the fact that you signed that book for your daughter? Mom of the Fuckin' Year Award right there.

Awww... I'm sure she could list off an EPIC CVS-receipt-length LITANY of my failings that uses up like 10,000 trees... you know the kind you get when you just went in for tampons, but still it prints and prints and prints??? ๐Ÿ˜‚ But I OWN all the failings b/c she is THE BEST! Think: Rory Gilmore + Fury! And I have been meaning to subscribe to Kathy's stack ever since I heard about it a month ago... I've just been scrambling on all my deadlines. I cannot wait to READ!!! xo

Did you ever tell your daughter the truth about the book? Did she read this post?

So, I have two daughters, both in their 20s, neither of whom could be less interested in reading gotham girl. Our family shrink says they are INDIVIDUATING, which is psychobabble for not talking to your mother, which is EXACTLY what I did in my 20s. I could not stand my mother. She was so bossy! I could not get far enough away from her. I had to move all the way to New York. They also wisely know that when I graduated from film school, Nora Ephron gave me an award and that "Everything is copy." Hence, they keep their mouths fairly zipped around me now for fear that some errant remark will end up in a book, movie, or ten-part streaming series.

I suspect I'll confess it all over I'M SORRY pie (as I do most things in our lives) with deep shame and remorse and a shit ton of shopping, plus a play because they are big on musicals or any experimental theater that involves Tavi Gevinson. (That said, if I feel the wrath... readers will no doubt glean some sense of it.) ๐Ÿ˜‚

What's so interesting/ironic/sad about the author of "Harriet the Spy" is the title of her biography... "Sometimes You Have to Lie: The Life and Times of Louise Fitzhugh, Renegade Author of Harriet the Spy" https://a.co/d/5SEyyQM

Ooooh!! One of my other favourite Dames! I watched Downton Abbey for her one liners and facial expressions alone. Anything she is in. Between her wit and caustic one liners and Dame Helenโ€™s hair.... oy. Perfection.

And yes to Carissaโ€™s suggestion. Can you give us a hint with initials? ๐Ÿ˜œ

Aren't Dames Maggie and Helen are just the best in so MANY things--from Downton to Prime Suspect to Harry Potter. I'll work on a fiction version of the story one of these days, but for good literary citizenship, I should keep mum about who's who... at least for a few more years :) xo

Bought your book. Canโ€™t wait to start it tonite.

Great post. I really want you to write a detailed essay about trying to get the authors signature for your daughter. That story deserves its own, unshared space. Go mama. Of course you wrote a note yourself. What mom wouldnโ€™t? โค๏ธ๐Ÿ™

Oh, thank you! I was still so in recovery while writing that book--so a bit wobbly. That story may find its way into a novel one of these days... in order to protect the innocent as well as the exhausted? Fiction feels so much easier than memoir :) xo
